21 Stages of Meditation
KUNDALINI YOGA WORKSHOP
ONLINE

The 21 Stages of Meditation is a framework from the Kundalini Yoga tradition that maps out the progressive experiences a meditator passes through on the journey from a restless, ego-bound mind to an awakened, liberated consciousness.
21 Stages of Meditation
The “21 Stages of Meditation” course developed by Yogi Bhajan and Gurucharan Singh focuses on experiential immersion in each stage. It is organized into three journeys—each journey containing seven stages. The purpose of this map is not to be rigidly linear, but to give you a sense of the terrain of meditation: what you may encounter, what each stage teaches, and how they fit together in deepening your relationship with the Self.

Journey 1: The Crystallized Self
From suffering to self-acceptance. This journey addresses the mental noise, emotional turbulence, and reactive tendencies that initially block clarity. It transforms your relationship with your own mind.
Stage 1: Upset – Restlessness, distractions, and discomfort dominate.
Stage 2: Boredom – Impatience arises; the mind resists stillness.
Stage 3: Irritation – Annoyance at inner or outer disturbances.
Stage 4: Focus – A breakthrough: concentration begins to hold.
Stage 5: Absorption – The mind settles into the meditation process.
Stage 6: Experience – You start to feel the meditative state directly.
Stage 7: Crystallized Self – The reactive mind loses power; a sense of inner stability and identity emerges.
Journey 2: The Expressive Self
From self-awareness to mastery of projection. Here you explore the depth of your authentic expression, consciously guiding thoughts, feelings, and presence.
Stage 8: Rasa (Essence) – The sweetness of consciousness begins to flavor your awareness.
Stage 9: Delight – Joyful awareness; savoring each thought and feeling from the Self.
Stage 10: Polish – Refining your expression so it aligns with your highest consciousness.
Stage 11: Presence – Holding a steady radiance; your being communicates without effort.
Stage 12: Radiance – Inner light shines outward; people feel your presence before you speak.
Stage 13: Prayerful Stillness – A deep communion with the Infinite through stillness.
Stage 14: Graceful Self – You embody dignity, grace, and a balanced power in action.

Journey 3: The Transcendent Self
From mastery of self to unity with the Infinite. This is the dissolution of separation. Awareness and identity expand beyond the personal into the universal.
Stage 15: Merging – Boundaries between self and other dissolve.
Stage 16: Infinity – Awareness touches the boundless; timelessness is felt.
Stage 17: Non-duality – The illusion of “me” and “you” fades entirely.
Stage 18: Sacrifice – Ego’s final surrender; living for the Infinite rather than for self-gain.
Stage 19: Selfless Service – Action becomes a natural outpouring of love and compassion.
Stage 20: Illumination – Fully awakened consciousness; the Self shines in all.
Stage 21: Liberation – Freedom from the cycle of reaction, fear, and attachment. Pure presence.

These stages aren’t necessarily sequential—sometimes you’ll experience flashes of later stages early on, or revisit earlier stages as deeper layers emerge.
-
Certain Kundalini meditations are designed to accelerate specific stages (for example, meditations for Delight or Graceful Self).
